How can Phil become No. 1? There are four ways
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The 110th U.S. Open marks the fourth tournament in the last two months where Phil Mickelson has a chance to overtake Tiger Woods as the No. 1 player in the world.
His chances at Pebble Beach are better than they've been in the other three events, too. There are actually four possible scenarios.
1. A Mickelson win puts him at No. 1 -- regardless of where Woods finishes.
2. But if Mickelson posts what would be his sixth runner-up finish at the Open, he could still take over the top spot as long as Woods finishes out of the top four.
3. If Mickelson finishes third at the U.S. Open and Woods finishes lower than 18th, the two would switch places at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.
4. And if Woods misses the cut, Mickelson needs to finish in a two-way tie for third or higher.
